2020 MLB season preview and predictions

With less than two weeks until the MLB season begins, a crazy off-season is coming to a close. After blockbuster trades, record-setting free agent signings, and one of the biggest cheating scandals in history, baseball is almost back.

With the season getting started, here are my predictions for this year:

AL East:

  1. New York Yankees
  2. Tampa Bay Rays
  3. Boston Red Sox
  4. Toronto Blue Jays
  5. Baltimore Orioles

The Yankees are clearly the superior team in the AL East. After winning 103 games last year and losing in the ALCS, they signed Gerrit Cole to a nine-year, $324 million contract, the highest ever for a pitcher. Tampa Bay is a young team on the rise and should keep things competitive. At the end of the season though, the Yankees should rule this division.

AL Central:

  1. Minnesota Twins
  2. Chicago White Sox
  3. Cleveland Indians
  4. Kansas City Royals
  5. Detroit Tigers

After winning 101 games last season, the Twins are poised to have another good season. They have all their core pieces returning, and they filled their biggest hole in the lineup by signing slugger Josh Donaldson. The White Sox are on the rise and the Indians have been at the top for the last four years. It should be a relatively close race, but the Twins should rule the AL Central in 2020.

AL West:

  1. Houston Astros
  2. Oakland A’s
  3. Los Angeles Angels
  4. Texas Rangers
  5. Seattle Mariners

It’s been a long and crazy off-season for the Astros and their fans. After being found guilty for cheating in the 2017 World Series, they fired their GM, fired their manager, lost multiple draft picks, and lost $5 million. With all that happening, the Astros should still win this division. They have their core players returning and a veteran manager to right the ship. The A’s and Angels should keep it close after their off-season moves, but the Astrso should take this division.

NL East:

  1. Atlanta Braves
  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Washington Nationals
  4. New York Mets
  5. Miami Marlins

The NL East should be the most competitive division in 2020. You can make a case for any team (except the Marlins) to win this division. The Mets have an elite rotation, the Nationals are the reigning World Series champions, and the Phillies made multiple key off-season moves. At the end of the year, though, the Braves should take this division. With the signings of veterans Cole Hamels and Marcell Ozuna to go along with the dynamic duo of Ronald Acuna Jr and Ozzie Albies, the Braves should beat out every team in this division.

NL Central:

  1. Chicago Cubs
  2. Cincinnati Reds
  3. St. Louis Cardinals
  4. Milwaukee Brewers
  5. Pittsburgh Pirates

Contrary to the NL East, this division will probably be the least competitive. With no team looking dominant, the CUbs will probably beat out everyone else. Though they did very little in the off-season, they have their core pieces returning who helped them in the 2016 World Series. The Reds made some big moves and the Cardinals could be dangerous, but neither should take down Bryzzo and the Cubs.

NL West:

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers
  2. Arizona Diamondbacks
  3. San Diego Padres
  4. Colorado Rockies
  5. San Francisco Giants

After losing in back-to-back World Series in 2017 and 2018, then losing in the first round of the playoffs in 2019, the Dodgers are on a vengeance in 2020. With reigning MVP Cody Bellinger just getting better, they made a blockbuster trade by acquiring one of the best players in the game in Mookie Betts and left-handed ace David Price. The Diamondbacks and Padres should have a good team this season, but they will need a lot to go right to be able to dethrone the Dodgers.

World Series prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers over New York Yankees

If this were to happen, it could be one of the best World Series of all-time. Having two teams with all-star caliber players at every position, the Dodgers and the Yankees are the two best teams in baseball. It would be a good series, but the Dodgers would probably come out on top.

We’ll see what happens, but 2020 should be a great year for baseball.
