Olivia Westphal to ball with the big guns
There’s no denying that sophomore guard Olivia Westphal is a stud. So far in her two years of high school basketball, she is a two-time First Team All-Conference winner, made all-tournament teams, and won tournament MVPs. This upcoming AAU season, she will be playing on the elite team for the WPA Bruins.
Olivia Westphal will be playing alongside some talented girls this spring and summer. Chartiers Valley point guard Megan McConnell, who recently won her second WPIAL Championship and is competing at the State Championship game this weekend, is one of these teammates.
Riley DeRubbo, a guard at Trinity High School who recently recovered from an ACL injury and came back to help her team make playoffs mid-season, is another one of these players. DeRubbo averaged 17.1 ppg as a sophomore, was named Observer-Reporter All-district First Team, and helped lead the Hillers to the PIAA Championships as a freshman.
The Bruins are a part of the Under Armour Gauntlet. They will travel all across the United States: Atlanta, Indianapolis, Detroit, D.C., etc. They will be playing in front of hundreds of college scouts and coaches, and Westphal hopes to impress a few.
“It’s an honor to get to play alongside the girls on this team. They’re all incredibly talented basketball players, and I can’t wait for them to push me to my fullest potential,” Westphal said when asked about her spot on the team.
Their first tournament will take place on April 5.
