Boys lacrosse set to play under Friday night lights
The boys lacrosse team opens their season home against Butler Area on Friday, March 23.
The Hawks are coming off a solid season last year going 9-7. This included a Section Championship, a 1st ever program win over Mt. Lebanon, 12-5, and a win over eventual WPIAL Champions Peters Township, 11-6.
The Hawks made a playoff run with a 13-6 1st round win over Fox Chapel; however, they lost a heartbreaker to Upper St. Clair in the 2nd round.
The boys lose All-WPIAL Adam Debski (defender), and Noah Bussard (midfield). They also lose All-Section Goalie Ty Hosler.
However, they return Gavin Campbell, Zak Ferris, Evan Bradley, Bryan Magnus, Luke Mattola, and Ray Kanopka as 4th year varsity players. They also have several college commitments:
Division 2 Commits-
- Luke Mattola (#4 Seton Hill)
- Gavin Campbell (#10 St. Leo)
- Noah Laouere (Wheeling Jesuit)
- Evan Bradley (Walsh)
- Zak Ferris (Walsh)
- Nick Sylvis (Alderson Broaddus)
Division 3 Commits-
- Josh Crist (Chatham)
- Chris Sylvis (La Roche)
- Anthony Richards (Thiel)
The boys team is led by Captains Luke Mattola, Gavin Campbell, Zak Ferris, and Bryan Magnus.
Senior Bryan Magnus had this to say about the team this year: “I think everyone on the team has the same goal, and that’s a WPIAL Championship.”
Commenting about the senior-heavy team, Magnus said, “We are a really talented team, [we] just need to put it all together this year. We work hard every day, and we are not coming up short.”
Senior Anthony Richards believes the team has a great bond. He describes the team as “high energy” and “very goal driven.”
“I see us getting a WPIAL Championship,” he said.
It seems like the boys are on the same page, but can they go the distance and capture the program’s first WPIAL Championship? Their journey begins at home this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Butler Area. Come out and support the boys’ lacrosse team and watch some Friday Night Lights!
