The varsity wrestling team will travel to Fox Chapel on Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18 for the Allegheny County Wrestling Championships. There will be around 40 teams competing and two of our own wrestlers Nino Bonaccorsi and Paul Dunn are seeded 3rd and 2nd respectively.
Bethel Park won the tournament in 2009, the same year they won the WPIAL championships as well.
Last year, Dunn was seeded 7th and placed 4th proving he was a top contender in his weight class. Finishing in the top eight in the tournament is quite an accomplishment; if you finish in the top eight places, then you are one of the best wrestlers in the county, which is a big deal. Dunn, who wrestles in the 152 lb. weight class, is currently 15-5 with ten of those wins ending with him pinning his opponent.
This is Bonaccorsi’s first year in the tournament, and he is expected to place within the top eight, which is a great accomplishment for a freshman. Bonaccorsi is 12-3 and has four pins, which is a great record so far. He is wrestling in the 132 lb. weight class, and he said, “I’m making my way through the ranks!”
Nino is planning on doing very well in the tournament, and he said, “I plan on wrestling my best in the tournament and coming home with a championship shirt.”
This weekend is going to be an exciting tournament and a decisive factor for wrestlers in Allegheny County, so competitors are sure to be bringing their game.
