Sunday’s afternoon Steelers game amidst the circulating chilly wind, muggy conditions, and bitter temperatures resulted in a 27-12 win for the Steelers.
The Steelers’ defense crushed the ‘Skins and put a vice and clamp on Robert Griffin III all day. Their defense wasn’t overly creative as their middle linebacker, Larry Foote, only sacked RG3 one time. Nevertheless, the Steelers’ 40’s throwback jerseys resembled bulky bumblebees as they swarmed RG3 and the ‘Skins’ offense.
Griffin only completed 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, while Roethlisberger was sharp all day long as he threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns by Leonard Pope, Heath Miller, and Will Johnson; all three of these stars are bulky tight-ends and fullbacks.
The Steelers’ defense also stomped the Redskins’ running as the ‘Skins only ran for a season low, 86 yards. On the other hand, the Steelers’ running game was incredible. Even though the Steelers’ star running back, Rashard Mendenhall was out, Jonathon Dwyer emerged as an NFL caliber running back. Dwyer ran for 107 yards in only his second NFL start.
On top of all of this diligent work by the Steelers, the team made sure they clinched a spot above .500 as they scored on its four possessions to ultimately take control of the game early. The Steelers’ once sluggish look after sudden losses to Oakland and Tennessee disappeared as they now looked unequivocally concentrated and confident.
As a whole, the Steelers’ offense and defense were strong all game long as Big Ben’s offense shredded the Skins’ defense and as Kiesel’s defense sucker punched RG3’s offense.
Eventually, Redskins’ coach Michael Shanahan blew a gasket and Washington lost its composure when the Steelers scored and kicked a field-goal after their first two possessions early in the first quarter.
After the game in a press conference, the star rookie quarterback, Robert Griffin III said, “We lost the game, that’s all that matters. You’re judged by wins and losses. I feel as bad as anyone else in that locker room right now.”
Griffin is undoubtedly in the running for rookie of the year and maybe even MVP, but if he keeps playing like he did in Sunday’s game, he sure won’t accomplish his goal.
