Anna McLinden stands with her parents and Bob Pompeani after being presented with her KDKA-TV Extra Effort Award on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

The band was playing, the cheerleaders were cheering, and the crowd was clapping; no, this wasn’t a Friday night Football game, but rather a celebration for one of BP’s finest.

During 9th period on Tuesday, Oct. 24, the majority of students and staff looked on as Bob Pompeani of KDKA awarded Anna McLinden the prestigious “Extra Effort Award.”

The “Extra Effort Award” is given to students who not only excel in athletics, but also in academics. Anna McLinden has proven she excels in both of these.

McLinden has been playing soccer for 13 years and lacrosse for five years, all while maintaining immaculate grades. She credits this to her hard work, competitive desire, dedication, and time-management. She also emphasized how she puts her heart into everything she does.

Her teammates recognize her drive and determination. Senior soccer player Jordan Mehalko said, “Anna’s work ethic is an inspiration to everyone on the field. It motivates all of us to also try our best.”

When spring comes around, McLinden’s MO does not change. Senior lacrosse player Alaina Cerro said, “Anna is a hardworking pla

yer [who is] focused on teamwork and making everyone a better player and person.” Cerro said that “her speed and skills” have aided the lacrosse team on the field. But perhaps the biggest part McLinden plays on the team is as a role model. “Everyone looks up to her,” said Cerro.

McLinden was humbled to receive the award. “I was very surprised that I was picked out of the 200 students nominated. I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It was pretty cool that the whole school came out to support me. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget for the rest of my life.”

She couldn’t take all of the credit for this award. “It was a recognition of the hard work that my teammates and I put in for both soccer and lacrosse,” she said. “I cannot thank everyone around me enough for pushing me to be a better player and student.”

Congratulations to senior Anna McLinden on receiving the KDKA “Extra Effort Award”!
