Ms. Aristegui’s Latin classes in IMS have been working on an original play. Students were required to write it completely in Latin, design costumes and props, put together music, and recite dialogue.

Students will perform the plays in class during Period 1 on Monday, March 14 in Room 112.

“The purpose of the project is to learn more about Roman culture through a creative project and to use prior knowledge of Latin to write an authentic play,” said French/Latin teacher Ms. Aristegui.

Students seemed to be excited about creating the projects, with the plot of their play being about a rich Roman man who falls in love with a slave girl and goes through a journey with the gods to win her over.

“The hardest part of the project is getting the students organized and getting them to bring in their materials,” said Ms. Aristegui.

The students had brought in multiple instruments such as a drum set, a saxophone, and a violin. They were also preparing costumes such as robes and sandals, and props of all sorts.

Ms. Aristegui’s favorite part of the project is seeing each student’s talent in action. She explained how each student in the class is unique with his or her interests and how this project can allow them to showcase his or her abilities.

Overall, the educational takeaway of the project is for students to realize their capability of putting together an original screenplay in a short amount of time, even in Latin.

About half the students said they were planning on taking Latin in high school and the other half wasn’t as enthusiastic.
