The Campus Life Battle of the Bands was on December 27, 2011. It showcased four talented, local bands. The aforementioned groups being named Phantom Lamb, Home Again, The Good Timer’s, and Lane 5. For the band who placed first, they received 100 dollars and a gold trophy. The group that came in second won 50 dollars and a silver trophy. Lane 5 and Home Again are no strangers to Campus Life Battle of the Bands, having participated in them before.
Phantom Lamb opened with a slower, alternative rock sound. They grooved between songs with ease, and kept the pace of their set captivating. They combined many elements into their performance, including electronic, psychedelic, and indie elements. A standout track being “I Could Walk For Miles.”
Home Again had an electrifying pop punk sound, intertwined with some melodic hardcore punk undertones that kept the audience moving throughout the set. They played mainly original pieces, with a standout being “Along the Way” with featured vocalist Holly Brueggman. The song features a slow build into a climax Another standout is their one cover of the night, “Beautiful Girls” by Taio Cruz. They really took the song and made it their own.
The Good Timer’s had a jamming rock presence, intertwined with some power pop and classic rock influences. They stood out as being the only three-piece at the event. The Good Timer’s set a tone in which built in to a climax, as any good They performed an energetic cover of Third Eye Blind’s “Semi-Charmed Life.” The crowd excitingly reacted to the songs final verse.
Lane 5 mixed multiple genres; including pop punk, alternative rock, heavy metal, and hardcore punk. Their set includes covers of Avenged Sevenfold, A Day to Remember, and Good Charlotte. They played a rocking original called “What We Can Be,” which had the crowd singing along with the band. Their final song, a cover of A Day to Remember’s “The Downfall of Us All” was excitingly intense and energizing, riveting the audience. This was a highlight track of the night.
At the conclusion of the night, and all the votes were cast, it was announced that Phantom Lamb had placed second. Phantom Lamb had successfully won 50 dollars and a silver trophy. And, as the mood intensified, the final vote proclaimed Lane 5 the winners. They effectively won 10o dollars and a gold trophy.
