As we all know, the flu and other various illnesses become more customary during the winter season. As a result, students and teachers start missing school regularly. Here are some tips if you want to stay healthy and prevent illness during the winter season, and maintain good attendance:
1.) Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Eating vegetables and fruit will provide your body with strength and stamina. Moreover, the nutrients in the vegetables and fruit will more than likely boost your immune system. You should have at least three servings of vegetables per day; this would include leafy greens and any other type of veggie. Also, some fruits like berries are packed with antioxidants.
2.) Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. It is crucial to wash your hands with soapy, warm water and dry your hands when you use the restroom and before every meal. Therefore, you need to scrub your hands in soapy water for at least sixty seconds. Evidently, this will ensure that all of the bacteria and viruses are killed on your hands. However, hand sanitizer is a good substitute if you’re away from a sink, but hand sanitizer doesn’t rinse away all the germs off of your hands. One should take in your hands.
3.) Get plenty of sleep. Getting of plenty of sleep during the winter season will ensure that your body is capable of fighting off illnesses in the winter. Furthermore, you should create a consistent bed routine that follows the same pattern every weekday. However, this can sometimes be hard due to school, extracurricular activities, and sports. Just make sure that you try to follow the same pattern everyday. This will teach your body to anticipate sleep at a certain time every night and, therefore, fighting off viruses more efficiently and effectively.
4.) Get a flu shot or flu mist. One can get a flu shot or flu mist at any pharmacy, doctor’s office, or places like MediHelp or MedExpress. Getting a flu shot ensures that you will not get the flu during the winter season.
5.) Drink plenty of water. Drinking plenty of water will help your body maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is the body regulating its internal environment and maintaining a stable body. This is vital for your body to maintain homeostasis so you do not come down with an illness. It is recommended that everyone drinks at least eight glasses of water a day. Water should be drunk when you exercise and during the routine of your normal day. Your body is 99% water and you must consume an ample amount of water for your body to stay healthy. Essentially, there is no substitution for water!
