Happy Mardi Gras!!

Madame Smith’s French classes celebrate Mardi Gras

Today is the festival full of bright colors, great food, and parties.  It’s Mardi Gras!

Mardi Gras is a French holiday that stands for Fat Tuesday.  It’s the Tuesday before Lent begins where people can gorge themselves on all of the delicacies that they’ll be giving up as part of the Lenten tradition.

One of the most famous celebrations of Mardi Gras is New Orleans’ Mardi Gras.  There, it is an all week event filled with massive parades and even bigger floats.  There are masks and purple, green, and gold beaded necklaces thrown by paraders to crowds who enjoy traditional foods such as macaroons, jumbalya, and of course, the famous King’s Cake.

The King’s Cake is a delicious sponge cake that has a hidden plastic baby inside.  Whoever is lucky enough to get the baby is the “King” or “Queen” for the day and also has to host next year’s party.

Madame Smith’s French classes at BPHS also celebrate Mardi Gras with traditional French foods like crepes.

Mardi Gras is a fun holiday filled with food, fun, and fantastic displays.  Happy Mardi Gras!!
