Rare coast-to-coast cold front hits U.S.
Winter Storm Fortis in the northeast is expected to travel across the country. Temperatures are expected to drop into the negatives and reach record lows. Snow storms will cover the country, some places capable of blizzard conditions.
Six or more inches of snow have been recorded in seven states already: Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. There have even been reports of thundersnow in northern states. New York even has thunder hail.
Fortis is expected to travel across the Great Lake Belt to reach the Western side of the country and continue through to the coast.
Fortis was caused by a southward plunge of arctic air, resulting in low air pressure, which increases heavy wind.
Large amounts of snow are expected to fall over the New Year weekend and winds are predicted to move North at potential speeds of 50 mph in some locations, particularly Maine and New Hampshire as Fortis heads for Canada.
‘Fortis’ is the latin word for ‘strong.’
Admire the scene, but remember to be careful in the current weather conditions.
