In light of Mr. Miller’s final Senate Bean Soup Day, I took the opportunity to interview him about his final year at Bethel Park High School.
Most people within BPHS know about Bean Soup Day. The smell of soup and bread has filled the halls a few times a year since 1998.
Miller says this day all started when he heard a story about Joseph Cannon, former Speaker of the House, and the soup served in the Capitol cafeteria. Cannon loved the bean soup, and one day the cafe took it off the menu. Cannon was so enraged that he started to pass legislation so that the soup could never be eliminated again. Needless to say, the soup has never been taken off the menu since.
Mr. Miller recalls a few of his favorite Senate Bean Soup Day memories. One student brought in a home-made wonton soup that created a line out the door. Another student spilled half of her pot of tomato basil soup in the car all over her friend’s white jeans. Good or bad, Mr. Miller has plenty of memories from all his years of foods days.
Mr. Miller is glad that he got the chance to move from the old school into the new school. He says there were some great times at the old school, but the new school is a very nice facility.
Miller says he wants to get a part time job once he retires. He hopes to find something still in the education area but he says “who knows, I might be a Wal-Mart greeter!”
Traveling and writing are also two big items on Mr. Miller’s to do list. He has a lot of stories that he wants to tell and he also hopes to make many more stories in the future.
When asked how he feels about retiring after all this time, Miller says he “feels quite good about it” because he “has taught some of the very best students and worked with an amazing staff.” Miller says some of his greatest memories are from BPHS. Even though he does not regret retiring, he says he will miss the school and everyone in it.
