The annual Powderpuff football game started off on a cool and misty Sunday evening on October 7. The entire crowd was shivering from head to toe while sitting on the frozen metal top bleachers.
In the first half, the Seniors went up 6-0 with a touchdown by Gracie Moody, which was soon followed by an extra point from the phenomenal kicker, Steffi Cobb. And, of course, the game was filled with exciting commentation by the one and only Mr. Schilling. He used catchy football terms like “slices and dices” and “steamrolls.” At one point, he used the term “fumblerooski”, a term that demonstrated Schilling’s enthusiastic attitude throughout the entire game.
The halftime show was filled with exciting laughter by the entire crowd. Senior fans tried to throw vibrant orange frisbees into two of the inflatable pools placed at the 50-yard line. The Senior fans came up short. The Junior fans were given the same opportunity but also come up empty-handed. Next, students from the crowd that came out to support the Juniors or the Seniors were given the opportunity to kick a field goal and win a hundred dollar gift card of their choice. The halftime show was cut short and the winner of this field goal competition was determined after the game.
At the start of the third quarter, the Juniors were in possession of the football; the Seniors were only up 7-0 and the Juniors, at this point, could easily surpass them. This was a critical time in the game for Juniors to tie it up. Not to mention, the Junior’s fan base had been outstanding throughout the game. The Visitor side was scattered with ingenious signs and loud noise. However, the Senior fans matched the Junior’s rowdy attitude.
Moreover, the Juniors marched down the field with brilliant and clever plays by the coaches, Dr. Jansante, the offensive coordinator and Mr. Johnson, the defensive coordinator. Some game-changers were Haley Bowen and Kavonna Anderson as they steamrolled through their opponents and spun their way down the field. However, their efforts came up empty-handed as they failed to convert on 4th down when Kavonna Anderson was brought down by Steffi Cobb in the backfield. Nevertheless, Steffi Cobb ended the longest drive in Bethel Park Powderpuff football history as the Juniors consumed all of the 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th quarter.
Undoubtedly, the Junior’s personal foul penalties late in the game costed them over 20 yards. Nevertheless, the Seniors, in the 4th quarter, were unstoppable and some noticeable players were Ashley Petro and Jensine Murphy, as Jensine sliced and diced her way into the endzone as the 4th quarter was ticking down.
Some prominent defensive players on both sides were: Lily Ganchuk (senior), Harper Zimmer (junior), and Dani Konopelski (junior) as they swallowed up the running backs throughout the entire duration of the game.
The intense excitement of the Powderpuff football game, coupled with the inclement weather, will leave an everlasting impression on all in attendance; at least until next year’s game.
