On the warm, spring afternoon of April 17, formal Massachusetts Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney visited the Bethel Park Community Center.
Bethel Park was chosen because the Republicans board of Allegheny County needed to select a South Hills location and Bethel Park was suggested. Romney’s secret service came to the BP Community Center on Monday, April 16th to examine the scene.
The day started around Noon whenever a meet and greet was open to the public. A rope was separating the Politician and his supporters. He smiled and shook some of their hands. I was on the same side of the rope as Romney and other BP council members and officials. He came over to us and shook our hands, even though he was in a hurry. He then proceeded to walk outside behind the building and participate in the round table discussion.
This event was covered by all the local news and even major news stations.
Bethel Bakery donated some cookies to Romney which later created major publicity to the Bakery.
After his discussion with random citizens previously chosen, I had the opportunity to talk to him again. I explained to the secret service that I am a high school student writing for our newspaper.
I once again shook Romney’s hand and I asked him, “What would your advice be for a high school student aspiring to become a politician?” and he laughed while responding, “make a career for yourself first.”
I then thanked him and explained that I am too young to vote for him but my parents will.
I have met many politicians before but I was happy to have the opportunity to meet a potential president.
