Artist of the Week: Hoodie Allen
From Brooklyn, New York hails one of the biggest up and comers in the hip hop scene named Hoodie Allen.
Hoodie Allen, the stage name of Steven Markowitz, began his music career in 2008. The stage name is a play on famous Jewish filmmaker Woody Allen, and a childhood nickname of his, ‘Hoodie.’
Before beginning his music career, Markowitz attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with a degree in marketing and finance. After graduating, he worked for Google in California. He would work at Google by day and make music by night.
Allen’s style is based in alternative hip hop. With influences from the pop rap and indie hip hop, Hoodie Allen’s style is truly his own.
To date, Allen has released five mixtapes, and two extended plays.
In 2012, Hoodie Allen released his first studio extended play titled All American. The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 charts. The lead single, “No Interruption,” gained massive popularity online. By the end of the year, the Hoodie Mob had grown exponentially.
In 2013, Hoodie Allen had two releases. Allen’s sixth mixtape, Crew Cuts, and his first acoustic extended play, Americoustic, were big successes; Americoustic debuted at number 29 on the Billboard charts. Crew Cuts produced popular single “Cake Boy.”
In 2014, Hoodie Allen is expected to release his first full length studio album. Following the album release, he plans to embark on a worldwide tour including the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia, which would take place in the fall of 2014.
