Theater Arts III put on a fabulous performance of Soldier’s Heart last Friday during school periods 3, 5, 7, and 9.
The class had worked long and hard to present the production, especially Lexie Quigley, who adapted the book into a scene. Lexie took the class during the first semester of the school year, but ran out of time to put on her adapted production. Aly Madar stepped up to direct, and with the help of the courageous second semester students, Lexie was able to display her work.
As you walked into the LGI room, the mood was set by fabric draped over lights. It created an atmosphere similar to that of fires being burned. A few actors were preset on the scene, keeping their character as distraught soldiers from the Civil War.
The soldiers had battle wounds that almost looked real. Most of the bruises and scuffs were put on by Aly Madar and Emi Makohus, but some of the actors did their own makeup.
The soldiers took action as the play began, cleaning up their camp and preparing for a fight. The sound effects, done by Christopher Waseman and Jesse Petrucci, were phenomenal. When the eight actors marched into battle, it sounded like a thousand men.
The battle scene was full of cool lights and sounds, as well as extremely impressive slow motion acting from the soldiers. A blackout took over as the fight ended, and red lights came up to reveal the death of most of the soldiers.
The two main characters, Charlie and Nelson, played by Dan Telek and Jimmy Marsh, had a emotional scene after the battle. These actors are definitely worthy of an Academy Award.
It is unbelievable that this whole production was put on only by students in Theatre Arts III. Everyone involved was very talented and overall, it was a fantastic performance.
