Usually taking place in October, the Powderpuff game was postponed due to the previous COVID-19 restrictions. It will now take place on Sunday, May 16.
The Powderpuff football game is a flag football game played between the junior and senior girls. It is a BPHS tradition going back nearly 50 years.
For this game to be a success, as many girls as possible from the junior and senior class need to sign up.
No football experience? That’s OK! The coaches for each team have many years of experience coaching powderpuff football and will teach you everything that you need to know.
Leading up to the game will be two weeks of practice to make sure that the girls are ready for the game.
When asked what made the game worthwhile, senior Grace Myers said: “I got closer with some of the girls that I didn’t think I would before and it was just such a fun way to kick off the school year. It also gave me a chance to participate in something that’s different than I normally would.”
The game is played with WPIAL varsity football rules and timing, which is the standard four quarters with 15 minutes in each quarter. The only difference is that there is no tackling involved.
Those who plan to play will only need to supply a mouth guard for the game, along with the purchase of a jersey. All players will need to wear a mask when they are not playing, and the coaches will wear masks at all times.
There’s a reason this game has been returning for half a century.
Junior and senior girls: please consider playing so that the long-standing battle can carry on for many years to come!
