Eagles outfly Hawks after two-set deficit

Heartbreak. That’s the one word that would sum up the girls’ varsity volleyball team’s game against non-section opponent Oakland Catholic on Monday, Oct. 9 in Eagle territory. The girls lost in five sets.

They came out swinging in the first two sets, which they won 27-25 and 25-20 respectively.

The squad had two players out, Morgan Kiefer due to illness and Brenna Manko due to traveling, but the Lady Hawks did not show that their absence was affecting them. Freshman Alexa Psotka did a fantastic job filling in for Manko and was second on the team in kills (6). Senior Emma Stuebgen led the team with seven kills; seniors Erin Sullivan and Stephanie Kazalas helped out with five kills apiece.

Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough for the Hawks. They lost the last three sets 8-25, 9-25, and 8-15. The Eagles out-hustled the Lady Hawks.

This loss brings the girls’ record to 7-5 overall, 5-3 in section, and 2-2 in non-section.

JV was unable to get a win against Oakland Catholic either; they lost 2-1. The JV team had high spirits going into the match since they were coming off of a big championship win at the South Fayette tournament on Saturday, Oct. 7. They won the first set but were unable to pull ahead in the next two. This now makes them 9-3 overall.

The girls travel to Upper Saint Clair for their next section match on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and then finish up the week at Mount Lebanon on Thursday, Oct. 12. The Lady Hawks hope to bounce right back against USC.

Hope everyone can make the short trip to support the team!

Go Hawks!
