Lady Hawks clinch Christmas Tournament

The girls’ varsity basketball team defeated South Fayette 47-43 on Wednesday, Dec. 28 to win their annual Christmas Tournament.

South Fayette was last year’s WPIAL Class AAA champs, so the Lady Hawks knew it was going to be a tough game. Toward the end of the game, the Hawks took a 10-point lead but the Lions closed the gap to four. Bethel sealed the deal though as junior Jill Acker grabbed a rebound with three seconds left on the clock.

Kam Lach, the all-tournament player, scored 15 points. Despite Ashley Spence fouling out in the 4th quarter, she managed to help the team by scoring 14 points and grabbed half the rebounds. She was awarded Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The Lady Hawks beat Mohawk 50-37 on Day 1 of the tournament giving them a spot in the championship game against the South Fayette Lions the next day. Dziezgowski ended the game against Mohawk with 12 points, followed by Cerro and Rodriguez both with 11.

The girls’ team will play their first section game against arch-rival Peters Township on Monday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 PM at Peters.
