Artist of the Week: Sky Ferreira

Born July 8, 1992 in Los Angeles as Sky Tonia Ferreira, she is a singer/songwriter, model and actress. When she was a teenager, she started uploading videos of herself singing self-written songs to Myspace, which led to her being discovered by producers Bloodshy & Avant. She signed a record deal with Parlophone Records.

In 2011, Ferreira released her first EP, As If!. It combined sounds of electropop and dance music. Her second EP, Ghost, was “poppier” with more stripped down song structures. On this record, she collaborated with Jon Brion and Shirley Manson, and on the critically-acclaimed song “Everything is Embarrassing”, she worked with Dev Hynes of Blood Orange.

In 2013, after many delays, Ferreira released her first album Night Time, My Time to great critical acclaim. This album marked a departure from her previous style, incorporating more experimental indie rock and electropop sounds. Preceding the album came the lead single “You’re Not the One”. Pitchfork Media and Fact Magazine named the album among 100 of the best albums of the 2010’s up to that point.

That same year, she became an actress, starring in Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno. Soon after the film’s premiere, she garnered much media attention for heroin possessionBut, at the beginning of 2014, it was announced that she would be an opening act for Miley Cyrus’ 2014 world tour.

Ms Ferreira has not released anything new since 2013’s Night Time, My Time, but one hopes that she will soon.
