Artist of the Week: Saint Motel

Formed in 2007, this up-and-coming Los Angeles-based band’s music has been described as running the gamut from “dream pop” to “indie prog.” The band consists of lead singer and guitarist  A/J Jackson, Aaron “a sharp” Sharp on lead guitar, Dak Lerdamornpong, the bassist, and Greg Erwin on drums.

The band originally came together in 2007 when the members were in college at Chapman University in Orange, California, and two years later, released their first EP, ForPlay in early September of the same year, for which, every song had an eye-catching retro-themed music video.

Jim Fusilli of the Wall Street Journal described the EP as “garage-glam.” Drew Kennedy of BMI wrote, “Saint Motel demonstrates their unique ability to seamlessly intertwine melody with melodrama without diminishing the power of either.” One of the songs from the ForPlay, “Dear Dictator,” was used in a 2013 trailer for the HBO drama, Boardwalk Empire.

The band released their debut album Voyeur in July of 2012 to rave reviews. Los Angeles radio station KCRW praised the album saying, “They have attacked it with gusto on Voyeur, adding dynamic touches to their rock-solid core of songwriting” and that “Overall, the album is a satisfying package from start to finish.”

The band embarked on an extensive tour of the US and UK in the summer of 2014, opening for bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Hockey, and Races.

In August of 2014, the band released their second EP, My Type.  The title track “My Type,” was featured as the “song of the week” in Cosmopolitan Italia. The band later added a few tour dates in Italy, noting their rising popularity there.

There hasn’t been anything new from the band since August, but one hopes to hear more in the future.
