Artist of the Week: Beach House

Beach House is an indie rock/dream pop duo from Baltimore formed in 2004. The band consists of Victoria Legrand, who was born in France, and Alex Scally who is a Baltimore native.

In 2006, they released their self-titled debut album to great critical acclaim. Pitchfork called it one of the best albums of 2006. They also said that it evoked “a recipe of fairground waltzes, ghosted lullabies and woodland hymnals” and compared the music of the duo to that of Mazzy Star, Galaxie 500, Spiritualized, and Slowdive.

Only 1,100 white vinyl editions of the album were pressed in 2006. The album has since been reissued on standard black vinyl.

In 2008, came their second album, Devotion. It reached #195 on the Billboard charts.

In 2010, they released their third album, Teen Dream. This was the band’s first album on the famous Sub Pop label. NME Magazine included it in their 2013 list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album was also included in the 2011 edition of the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. And in August, 2014 ranked it as the fifth best album of the 2010s so far.

In 2012, the band released their most well-known and most recent album to date, Bloom. The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 41,000 copies in it’s first week. The album was placed on Pitchfork’s list of the 100 best albums of the decade so far in 2014.

The band has not been very active since 2012, but one hopes that will change soon.
