Career Spotlight: Psychology

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, Richard Kapusta visited the high school to talk to students interested in the psychology field. It is unknown to many, but Dr. Kapusta is the psychologist for the Bethel Park School District. In addition to his work for the school district, he owns a small private practice near Pittsburgh. He has also participated in multiple studies of the effects of certain medications on patients.

Dr. Kapusta received his undergraduate degree and master’s degree in psychology at California University of Pennsylvania and continued his education to earn a doctorate in higher education with an emphasis in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Kapusta spoke about the competitiveness of the psychology field in this part of the country, as well as the education necessary to get a job in the field. Kapusta’s knowledge of the different types of psychology allowed him to answer questions from students easily. Some questions included outlook for the job and prospective salary.

For Bethel Park, he evaluates students who may be thought to have a learning disorder, behavioral disorder, anxiety and depressive disorders, or attention deficit disorders. He stated that he enjoys his job because every case he works on is different! For example, one day he may be evaluating a student for a behavioral disorder, and the next day he may be setting up a plan to help get a struggling student back on track at school.

Psychologists usually do research on one’s behavior and functions. They can earn around $70,000 a year. In addition, private practice psychologists, like Dr. Kaputa, can set their own hours. They need a Ph.D. in psychology or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree.

The career spotlight series is unfortunately over for this year, so look forward to seeing them return next year. In addition, even if you do not go to them, you can catch up on them on Hawk Eye!
