Career Spotlight: Dental Hygienist

On Wednesday Nov. 26, BPHS welcomed dental hygienist Victoria Green. Green is the Chair of Admissions at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dental Hygienist are licensed preventative oral health professionals. They study preventative oral healthcare.

If you want to pursue a career in dental hygiene you must posses skills like manual dexterity, ethics, and strong interpersonal skills. Also, you must be positive, outgoing, and a team player.

The hours you must work vary depending on your office. Your work atmosphere is positive, organized, and clean.

A dental hygienist’s compensation may be very broad and regionally based.

You have many duties if you want to make a living in this career. Performing Dental Prophylaxis, Scaling and Root Planing, and Dental Radiographs, administering local anesthesia, and educating patients are among some responsibilities.

Travel is not required but opportunities exist depending on career options.

To get into the University of Pittsburgh’s Dental Hygiene program, you must score an SAT score of 1100 or ACT score of 24. Also, you should shadow jobs and have sciences such as biology and chemistry with labs. Honors and AP courses are recommended. Community service is also recommended. Pitt’s program is one of twelve in Pennsylvania.
