Art students paint with bleach

Usually when you think of bleach, you think of cleaning, not art.

Well, senior Cassidy Phillips and junior Alia Jones recently made artwork from a black illustration board and, yes, bleach.

Phillips and Jones are students in Mr. Wallisch’s art class.

To start this project, they did research on the chemical properties of bleach and what it would do to the black board.

They then choose an image and drew it onto the black illustration board.

The next step involved using the bleach to remove the black coating on the board.

Phillips said, “This process was risky and nerve wracking because if you make a mistake, you can’t go back. This was much more difficult to use than paint.”

Phillips’ piece is called Endurance.

“I chose Endurance because only 1% of sea turtles survive to maturity due to predators, poachers, and pollution, among other things. With the amount of threats they face every day, I thought it was admirable that they are still alive and surviving way past their ancient ancestors,” Phillips said.

After making these pieces, they decided they would go to the AIU. These pieces will also be displayed at the Champion of Wellness celebration.
