A night to remember…or a night to forever forget? Prom 2017 review

Prom was held last Friday, May 19 at the Sheraton in Station Square, located across the river with a beautiful view of downtown.

The event included catered food from the hotel itself, a candy bar, a DJ, a balloon animal lady, a s’mores station, a card reader, caricature artist, and a photo booth, all for the student’s and their guest’s enjoyment.

The pros of this event included everything except for the food, the pay for parking next to the hotel, and the decorations above the dance floor. Those were the cons.

Let’s start with the food. The first “course” consisted of a small side salad, with stale croutons, and no dressing until around seven minutes later. The next course consisted of either chicken or pasta, both of which were not to die for. The chicken was dry, the vegetables were a little overcooked, and the pasta was hard and bland. The only good thing that the chef had to offer were the potatoes, those were great. Lastly, dessert. Guests attending the prom had a choice of either chocolate cake, candy, or s’mores from the two bars located in separate parts of the venue. Compliments to the chef on the cake and potatoes.

Next, we go to parking. Parking in the lot by the hotel was $8. That doesn’t seem like a ton, but why wouldn’t that be included in our ticket price? It’s really not that big of a deal, but when it comes down to it, it just seems like a hassle to have to pay for parking after already paying about $90 for a ticket, much less two.

Lastly, the decor. The theme was perceived as either Twilight Woods or Moonlight in the Woods. Either way, there could’ve been a little more decorations around the venue, rather than just some strings of fake leaves above the dance floor. Maybe a lamppost? A moon, perhaps? I get it, there’s a budget, and some, if not most of us are to blame for the lack of money that was raised for this event. But if we could afford a number of different activities, we could probably afford a fake lamppost or two.

Other than that, the Pens won, and if you were out on the balcony at the time of 10:00, you would’ve seen a beautiful fireworks show out at PNC Park.

All in all, it was a great night, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, minus some minor inconveniences.
