Artist of the Week: King Krule

Born August 24, 1994 in London as Archy Ivan Marshall, King Krule began his musical career in 2010 at age 15.

His musical style is very difficult to pinpoint. This is so because it incorporates elements of various genres such as punk jazz, hip hop, darkwave and trip hop. His stage name is inspired by the film King Creole and not the Donkey Kong character King K. Rool.

He released his first single “Out Getting Ribs” under the alias Zoo Kid in 2010 on the House Anxiety label. The song was recorded and mixed in his bedroom with two of his friends.

On November 8, 2011, Marshall released a self-titled EP under the name “King Krule” on the True Panther Sounds label. Marshall also releases music under the aliases DJ JD Sports and Edgar the Beatmaker, the styles of which are significantly different than anything he releases as King Krule.

On December 9 2012, the BBC announced that Marshall had been nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll.

On August 24, 2013, Marshall released his first full length album, 6 Feet Under the Moon. More than half of the songs on this album were on half of his previous releases. This album bought him to prominence in the US, where he appeared on Conan and The Late Show with David Letterman. That same year, he embarked on a European tour.

In 2014, he released a a single, “A Lizard State,” and its video, which accrued over 700,000 views on YouTube. After a short break, he embarked on a European tour, but he inexplicably missed his homeland on said tour. In the same year he appeared on the cover of the 90th issue of The Fader.

Many journalists and reviewers have noted King Krule’s transcendence and appropriation of disparate genres. His music has been likened to that of Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Marshall cites artists such as Gene Vincent, Fela Kuti, J Dilla, and The Penguin Cafe Orchestra as some of his musical influences and inspiration.
